“We were willing to go to that point, if this was a winning team this year, but we weren’t,” Hoyer said. “So with that, we were able to, in my mind, speed that process up dramatically because we’re able to acquire a lot of young talent, some on the major-league team, some that’ll be in the minors.

“We were nervous,” he said. “We’re like, ‘How are they gonna receive us being these goofballs on bikes showing up doing tricks?’ They’re out here doing real deal things and man, when we saw all those serious, almost hardened troops, the men and women walking around base, when we saw them flip a switch and jump up and down and scream and yell and laugh and have fun, that was such a huge moment.
“About 10:30 that night, I just looked around and thought, ‘It looks like nothing ever happened.’ People were playing pool, it was busy and people were having fun,” she said. “It was a little shocking, but it also felt good. I definitely had mixed feelings about it, though, because you’re a little afraid of what might happen.”

MyKayla Skinner, who had the fourth-highest score in vault during qualifications, will compete in vault finals for the U.S. alongside Jade Carey, who finished with the second highest score. Skinner initially did not make the vault finals because International Gymnastics Federation rules allow each country a maximum of two athletes per event in the finals.
