Jelani Day, a 25-year-old graduate student at ISU, was last seen the morning of Aug. 24 walking into a store called Beyond / Hello in downstate Bloomington, according to the Bloomington Police Department. Day’s family, from Danville, has offered a $25,000 reward, and started a GoFundMe to add to that. As of Friday afternoon, it had raised over $7,000.
“When outbreaks happen in school, they often start outside of school because of activities that families are engaged in that pose some risk for contracting COVID,” said Carnethon, with Northwestern. “The fear and concern that will naturally arise when a school is labeled as having an outbreak and may have to shut down in whole or part could result in some positives. Namely, experiencing an outbreak should serve as a reminder to families about their responsibilities outside of school in keeping the community and our schoolchildren safe.”

“We share the governor’s goal of vaccinating health care workers against COVID-19 to protect themselves, their families, patients and communities against severe disease, long-term health consequences and possible death,” A.J. Wilhelmi, president and CEO of the Illinois Health and Hospital Association, said in a statement. “Hospitals continue to be on the front lines fighting the pandemic during this latest surge of the virus, while simultaneously continuing to make progress in vaccinating health care workers.”
“We are devastated by the passing of our colleague Jessica Vilaythong and extend our deepest sympathies to her family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time,” a spokesman for Chase Bank said in an email. “Jessica was a wonderful person and valued employee. She was extremely outgoing, passionate, hardworking, and quick to help clients. We will miss her greatly.”
The mandate follows similar requirements from private businesses, the City of Chicago, Cook County and Chicago Public Schools. Gov. J.B. Pritzker has required state employees who work in congregate settings, such as prisons and veterans homes, to be vaccinated.
The latest data available on CPS’s online tracker, which was updated Wednesday, reflects 28 adult and 11 student cases this week. Nearly 150 people are in “close contact” quarantine, which means they came within 6 feet of a person with COVID-19 for 15 or more minutes in a 24-hour period while wearing or not wearing a mask, per the district.

In response, the state passed a law creating two additional lotteries in which applicants qualified by scoring 85% or better. Nevertheless, some applicants complained that the process unfairly favored white, politically connected, wealthy applicants by allowing unlimited applications for those who could pay the $5,000 fee for each application.
