Manfred said the players’ proposals included, among other items, five-year free agency and MLB’s proposals included eliminating draft-choice compensation, using a universal designated hitter and creating a draft lottery. According to The Athletic, after a year in which free agency remains at six years, the union’s proposal includes two years in which players with five years of service time and were at least 30½ could become free agents and two more years in which players with five years who are least 29½ could become free agents.
In a statement shortly after the lockout began, the Players’ Association said, “This shutdown is a dramatic measure, regardless of the timing. It is not required by law or for any other reason. It was the owners’ choice, plain and simple, specifically calculated to pressure the Players into relinquishing rights and benefits, and abandoning good faith bargaining proposals that will benefit not just Players, but the game and industry as a whole.”
Subban was looking to compete again this season, but the Hawks surprised the hockey world and traded for Fleury in July, which, ironically, pushed Fleury’s former Golden Knights teammate out of the goalie picture. Ertz, Gorden and international slots in 2022 and 2023 were traded to Angel City FC in exchange for roster protection in the upcoming expansion draft. Ertz has been on the Red Stars since 2014, and Gorden, a DePaul alumna, was drafted by the team in 2016.
Corporate travel has been especially hard-hit during the pandemic, as people are quicker to plan vacations than business trips, especially as employers delay reopening offices amid a new wave of infections this fall. The emergence of a new highly transmissible variant, omicron, has added uncertainty about the timing for a broader return to business travel. Just last week, the U.S. imposed new restrictions on travel from South Africa and seven other countries in the region.
