As the omicron variant continues to rage, sports leagues and the federal government have changed their policies for COVID-positive people. The NFL has said that vaccinated asymptomatic players can test off the COVID list with two negative tests, while unvaccinated players have to isolate for ten days. On Monday, the CDC shortened the isolation period after testing positive — regardless of vaccination status — from ten to five days.
According to a statement from executive director Roche Schulfer, all remaining performances of the Goodman’s 44th annual production have been scrapped through closing Dec. 31. “COVID-19 exposure within the production company, along with current public health conditions and rapid transmission rate of the recent surge, have made it necessary to close to ensure the safety of audiences, artists and staff.”
“Right now, we know there are staffing challenges in many industries, like the airlines and retail,” Gates said. “This variant is so contagious. … How many educators can you have out of the building before we pivot to virtual is a question of not whether we’ll be open or closed, but what are the contingency plans?”
“I’m thrilled that we are able to welcome back our New Year’s Eve fireworks and hope to continue this tradition into the future,” Lightfoot said in the statement. “Importantly, the display can be viewed outdoors where the spread of COVID-19 is less likely, so our residents and visitors should feel comfortable while masking up and social distancing or even watching safely from home. I look forward to welcoming a happy new year.”

Other women’s games canceled this week include No. 21 Iowa’s scheduled Thursday game at Penn State, which was called off because of positive COVID-19 tests within Penn State’s program. Fourth-ranked Arizona also saw both of its games get wiped out this weekend because of COVID-19 issues at USC and UCLA.
“Obviously losing a guy like Fleury, it’s not easy,” coach Derek King said. “But there’s an opportunity for (Kevin Lankinen) to get more games in and step up. … If (the schedule) works out, maybe Deals gets a game in and there’s an opportunity for him also.”
