Following the bids, Snyder — who was having financial trouble — went to the owners of Great Lakes Peterbilt, Stephen and Robert Buha, and asked them for money, said Assistant U.S. Attorney Jill Koster, at Snyder’s retrial. Snyder claims to have done health insurance consulting, Koster said, but no contracts were written and there was no documented proof work was done.

At the same time, Americans proved their resilience in different ways. They paid more across the board for necessities like food and gas, putting pressure on holiday shoppers’ budgets. In fact, consumer prices rose 5.7% over the past year, the fastest pace in 39 years, as a surge in inflation confronts Americans with the holiday shopping season under way. The November increase, announced Thursday by the Commerce Department, followed a 5.1% rise for the 12 months ending in October, continuing a string of annual price increases that have been above the 2% inflation target set by the Federal Reserve.

As McFolling transitioned from a 27-year banking career and stepped into her role as president, she recalled one piece of advice: “My cousin, Michael Parker, the chairman, he told me, ‘Robin, once you get in there, you’re gonna have your own vision. And what you don’t know, there will be people there that can mentor you in those areas.’ And he was 100% right.”

“In reality, Ted has very, very little to do with football. He doesn’t tell them what they should do in the draft. He doesn’t ask them about specific players. He’s not telling them what to do in free agency either. That’s where I don’t understand the concept of hiring a president over football operations because Ted has no direct influence over anything that’s going on with the football team. I’m sure Ryan (Pace), when he wants to trade for Khalil Mack, he calls Ted and says, ‘Can I do this?’ Ted says yes. ‘Can I sign Mike Glennon? Can I sign Andy Dalton?’ All of those things. It’s not like Ted has been a roadblock to the many moves they’ve made. They’ve gotten approval on a lot of dumb stuff. It’s not like Ted is telling them no. So if you bring in some president of football operations, Ted is still doing the same thing he is already doing. He’s overseeing finance, marketing, the business crew, the stadium, all of that stuff. All of the stuff that he’s gonna do anyway, he’s still doing.

“Any relief is welcome, believe me,” said Florida Panthers general manager Bill Zito, who is eager to see how the flexibility might help. “It’s tough. What if all your goalies get it? What are you going to do? We’ve been through, as a management team, any number of scenarios surrounding the ‘what-ifs’ — or maybe we’re kidding ourselves and we should be thinking about the ‘whens,’ as far as who gets it and when.”
