The all-electric building gets its electricity from rooftop solar panels, but its heat and cooling are powered by geothermal pipes, which are dug deep into the ground, to take advantage of relatively mild year-round temperatures of about 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. The building, which does not have batteries to store energy, produces excess power during the day, when the sun is out, and pulls electricity from the grid at other times. Excess energy from the panels is used by the adjacent park.

Amazon Books came across as if it had been created by data miners who once visited a mall bookstore like Waldenbooks. Once, years ago. As I wrote when it opened, if a bookstore reflects a community, Amazon Books felt right for slick, gentrified Southport. What’s more obvious now is how much the store also reflected Amazon’s approach to books themselves. To grow his nascent web business in the 1990s, Bezos needed a loss leader. Books had a mostly uniform size (making them easier to package and ship) and upscale customers (drawing a demographically-attractive base who might stick around for toasters and socks). But when it came time to occupy real-world real estate and mine real-time data from physical locations, books were an odd choice. Amazon was so successful online with books, a strange hybrid evolved: the Amazon book customer who feels guilty buying books from Amazon. (Perhaps, um, you know one or two of these creatures?) And so, occasionally they go out of their way to browse and buy books from warm, local bookstores. But why leave home to shop for books at Amazon?
“The reality of it is looking in our face,” Donovan said. “It’s about how we have to respond to it. We have a long, long way to go in these moments, but this is what we have to go through. … Our guys are playing hard. They’re trying, they don’t give up, they battle, they fight. But I’m hoping we learn some lessons sooner or later.”
Rather than allow her to create discord, focus on removing her access to combustible material. If discussing your baby’s name always leads you down the same path, then stop discussing it. You just say, “Well, we haven’t decided on a name, but we know your preference.”

“We’re kind of getting near full force right now,” Donovan said. “We’ll see how he responds and how he does, but it’s good news. … I was optimistic that he would be able to get back before the end of March. He’s moving in that direction, but a lot of it’s going to now depend on how it goes once he does that and what medical feels is an ample amount of time for him to get comfortable actually going into a game.”
“With the shift the last couple years, I played a lot of second base, played it a whole lot,” Simmons said. “If they need me, I’m part of the team. I’m trying to win. … We talked about I’m going to play mainly short, but I don’t know what’s going to happen throughout the season. I’m open to helping out wherever I’m needed.”
“I have to see what happens with this season,” he said. “My goal right now is just to have a very good season, stay healthy. … Once the season ends, I will have to make a decision and see if I want to continue or if there’s a chance to be here or if there’s a chance to be in another place.”
“Especially that first year there, having all the pieces and all the coaching staff together, having the players, Kyle Fuller to Prince (Amukamara) to Eddie (Jackson) to (Adrian) Amos to Akiem (Hicks) to Eddie Goldman to Leonard Floyd and Danny Trevathan, Roquan (Smith), I could go on and on,” Mack said. “Knowing what that felt like out there playing with those guys, it was a special time, special moment in my life. And those were four years I’ll never forget, and I thank that organization for taking a chance on me.
