If the Cubs want multi-inning options behind the starting group, this trio can give them length. Smyly eventually could work his way into the rotation. After reporting to camp Saturday, he’s a little behind, though, making him a likely bullpen arm until his workload gets to a starter level. Thompson is vying for a starting spot and should not be ruled out for opening the year in the rotation. But it would make sense to have the hard thrower as a multi-inning weapon, a role in which he thrived last year for the Cubs. Thompson notably still has minor-league options, as does Steele.
