“These are the people who got swindled out of homeownership,” Lewis Johnson said. “Regardless of what solution we come up with, we have to remember that the value of these neighborhoods needs to increase in comparison to their white counterparts. Whatever solution we create for redress, it can’t make a specific population — in this case, Black people, vulnerable again because when you segregate Black people you make them vulnerable to people who are greedy, even if they’re not racist, there are institutions or businesses that view them as a market to financially take advantage of.”

Márquez told the Tribune he developed myocarditis after getting COVID last season. Myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle, has been connected to post-COVID cases, and Márquez believes that is how he developed it. Boston Red Sox pitcher Eduardo Rodríguez notably missed the 2020 season because of myocarditis after contracting COVID. Testing discovered Márquez’s myocarditis, which he dealt with from April until November when he was fully cleared. Márquez was allowed to do light work and use some weights in September.

“I’ve been told that when they first came in, they were a little drawn back — obviously coming into a police station, you don’t know what to expect,” Edwards said “Since that date, now they come in and are like ‘Hey, we’re here!’ They feel a lot more comfortable, which is great not only in the building, but comfortable with the officers and interacting with them, which again, that’s great for us. Because of that interaction with them, we’ve been able to tell them about youth programs that we offer here in the 12th District. Developing their partnership, that relationship with them is beneficial for us too,”
