Lake County authorities Monday identified a woman and her grandson who died when the car in which they were traveling was struck by a Metra train in Ingleside.

The coroner’s office said Patricia Shemberger, 75, of Antioch, and Noah Kucinski, 13, of Lockport, died from blunt force injuries.

the driver of the car, whom police said is Shemberger’s husband, 70, was taken to Condell Memorial Medical Center in Libertyville with what police said were non-life-threatening injuries.

Their car collided with the commuter train at 12:10 p.m. Sunday at the Wilson Road crossing near Larkin Lane.

Their car, a Hyundai Elantra, was southbound and ran through the crossing gate, which was down and with its warning lights active, according to the sheriff’s office. The car did not slow and drove into the path of train, which struck the driver’s side of the car, police said.

A sheriff’s deputy was stopped on Wilson on the other side of the crossing and witnessed the collision, police said.

The woman was in the back seat of the car, and she was ejected. Authorities pronounced her dead at the scene. The youth, who was in the front passenger seat, was critically injured and also pronounced dead at the scene.

No charges have been filed. The investigation is continuing, police said Monday.
