A South Holland man was driving drunk and speeding at more than 100 mph when he blew through an Oak Lawn intersection Sunday and hit a vehicle carrying a 3-year-old Burbank boy who later died, according to Oak Lawn police.

The boy was identified by the Cook County medical examiner’s office as Matthew Dushenko, of the 6100 block of West 82nd Street, and he was pronounced dead at 6:35 p.m. Tuesday at Advocate Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn.

The boy was a passenger in a 2022 Toyota Sienna driven by his mother and also carrying her husband and another 7-year-old child, according to police.

The crash occurred at the intersection of 95th Street and Ridgeland Avenue, and the husband had to be extricated from the Toyota and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he remains in critical condition, police said Wednesday.

The mother and the 7-year-old were treated for injuries at Christ and later released, police said.

Police said Paul Sutton, 43, of South Holland, was driving a Jeep Cherokee at speeds of more than 100 mph when driving west on 95th Street, striking the passenger side of the Toyota.

Sutton was partially ejected through his vehicle’s windshield and needed to be extricated by Oak Lawn firefighters and remains in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to police.

Police said Sutton was driving with a blood-alcohol content of .196%, or more than twice the legal limit in Illinois, and that an open bottle of alcohol was found in the Jeep.

The Cook County state’s attorney’s office approved felony charges against Sutton including aggravated driving under the influence causing death, according to police. He was also wanted on an active arrest warrant for aggravated driving while having his license suspended or revoked, according to police.

Police said they did not have information regarding Sutton’s injuries, but he was hospitalized at Christ and bond was set Wednesday at $500,000. He would have to post the full amount in order to be released, police said.

Sutton is scheduled to appear Aug. 15 at the Bridgeview courthouse.
