Chicago White Sox add infield prospects Bryan Ramos and José Rodríguez to their 40-man roster

Bryan Ramos ranked near the top of several offensive categories throughout the Chicago White Sox organization.

José Rodríguez made a mark in the Southern League during 2022, finishing in the top five in stolen bases, triples, hits, home runs and RBIs.

The Sox on Tuesday added the two infielders to their 40-man roster.

Ramos, 20, had a combined .266/.338/.455 slash line with 19 doubles, one triple, 22 home runs, 86 RBIs and 72 runs in 120 games between High-A Winston-Salem and Double-A Birmingham.

Ramos was third in Sox organization in RBIs, fifth in homers, sixth in hits (123) and total bases (210), eighth in runs and slugging percentage and tied for ninth in extra-base hits (42).

“He’s very focused on the things that he wants to do on the field and I think everybody knows that he has a ton of power,” Sox outfield prospect Oscar Colás said of Ramos through an interpreter in July. “He can hit the ball hard.”

Ramos is a native of La Habana, Cuba, and was signed as an international free agent in July 2018. He is the No. 5 prospect in the Sox organization, according to MLB.com.

The third baseman has a career 259/.344/.432 slash line with 52 doubles, nine triples, 39 home runs, 169 RBIs and 172 runs in three seasons.

Ramos slashed .275/.350/.471 with 19 homers 74 RBIs in 99 games for Winston-Salem in 2022 and .225/.279/.375 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 21 games for Birmingham. He had a 15-game hitting streak from April 10-30 with Winston-Salem, going 26-for-64 during the stretch — a .406 average — with six doubles, three homers and 15 RBIs.

Rodríguez, 21, did a little bit of everything before suffering a season-ending left hand fracture in August.

He slashed 280/.340/.430 with 21 doubles, six triples, 11 home runs, 68 RBIs, 75 runs and 40 stolen bases in 104 games for the Barons. He was second in the Southern League in steals, tied for second in triples, was third in hits (123), fourth in batting average and tied for fifth in RBIs. He was sixth in runs and seventh in total bases (189).

Rodríguez, who played 53 games at shortstop and 43 at second base, is a native of Valverde, Dominican Republic, and was signed as an international free agent in February 2018. He is the No. 7 prospect in the Sox system, according to MLB.com.

He has a career .291/.334/.449 slash line with 68 doubles, 17 triples, 36 homers, 173 RBIs, 213 runs and 93 stolen bases in four seasons in the Sox organization.

Rodríguez was on a roll before the injury, slashing .319/.413/.768 with four doubles, nine homers and 17 RBIs in 17 games in August.

Tuesday marked the deadline for teams to add to their 40-man rosters and protect eligible players from the Rule 5 draft. With Tuesday’s moves, the Sox’s 40-man roster increases to 38.
