A five-bedroom, 4,652-square-foot vintage house on the Northwest Side that was designed by architect David Saul Klafter sold on June 16 for $1.1 million — a very high price for its specific neighborhood.

Klafter, who worked as a draftsman for noted architects Daniel Burnham and Jarvis Hunt, was Cook County’s architect in the 1940s and while in private practice designed numerous buildings in Chicago, including the apartment building at 1420 N. DuSable Lake Shore Drive and the 16-story office building at 330 S. Wells Street.

The house that sold is in the West Ridge area’s Peterson Park neighborhood, although the area also is known as Peterson Woods. Built in 1928, the house has 3-1/2 bathrooms, two fireplaces, a large foyer with custom tile, and a living room and dining room that have plenty of original details, including dark oak trim, arched leaded windows and high coved ceilings. The house also has a tile roof and a variety of classic and Mediterranean architectural touches on the exterior.

Other features include a first-floor primary bedroom suite with a custom closet with built-ins and an eat-in kitchen with a large quartz island, a prep sink, a walk-in pantry and three skylights. The lower level has a family room with a wet bar, a second full-size kitchen and a bathroom with a spa and a sauna. Outside on the property are two decks off the first and second floors, each with pergolas.

“This house has beautiful woodwork, and the sellers maintained the vintage details but also had a modern kitchen with top-of-the-line Bosch appliances and had put an addition on the back of the house,” listing agent Joan Brennock of Baird Warner told Elite Street. “The sellers had lived there (almost) 40 years and raised five children there. The house also overlooks Legion Park. It’s a beautiful setting.”

The sellers first listed the house in October 2021 for $1.2 million.

The house had a $7,262 property tax bill in the 2020 tax year.
