2026 Mazda CX‑90 PHEV Premium Plus — Luxury SUV or Overpriced Plug‑In? | Walkaround Review

2026 Mazda CX‑90 PHEV Premium Plus — Luxury SUV or Overpriced Plug‑In?
2026 Mazda CX‑90 PHEV Premium Plus Review – Mazda’s Confident Step Into Luxury
Mazda isn’t a brand that usually shows off. It’s built its reputation on driver connection, clean design, and solid value.
But the 2026 CX‑90 PHEV Premium Plus isn’t just another family SUV with a plug—it’s Mazda’s attempt to sit at the same table as Lexus and Volvo. And after spending time inside and around this flagship, it feels like Mazda finally belongs in that conversation.
Design: Subtle Confidence
Finished in Platinum Quartz Metallic, the CX‑90 presents itself with quiet sophistication.
Mazda’s designers avoided the chrome‑heavy clichés you see in most luxury SUVs. Instead, you get a sculpted body with long, elegant lines and just enough presence to turn heads without shouting for attention.
The proportions are right—single‑line shoulder, slim light signatures, and confident 21‑inch wheels wrapped in all‑season rubber.
The result? A design language that says upscale before anyone looks at the badge.
Powertrain and Drive Character
Under the hood, Mazda’s e‑Skyactiv Plug‑in Hybrid system pairs a 2.5‑liter inline‑four with an electric motor for a combined 323 horsepower and 369 lb‑ft of torque, delivered through an 8‑speed automatic and standard all‑wheel drive.
The CX‑90 doesn’t chase outright speed. Instead, it delivers smooth, confident thrust with instant electric torque off the line and a composed transition when the gas engine joins in.
Mazda’s chassis tuning still shows its soul—tight steering, well‑damped suspension, and that light‑on‑its‑feet feel missing in many three‑row SUVs.
Add Mi‑Drive modes (Sport, Off‑Road, Towing, and EV) and you can tailor the experience without over‑complicating the interface. For everyday driving, EV mode handles short commutes quietly and efficiently—the EPA estimates 56 MPGe combined or 26 MPG on gas alone, numbers that fit real‑world expectations.
Interior: Crafted Precision
Step inside, and Mazda’s confidence continues.
The White Nappa Leather feels rich, the stitching is deliberate, and nothing inside looks tacked on.
Fit and finish approach what you’d expect from a German or Japanese luxury rival, and everything you touch has substance—from the leather‑wrapped steering wheel to the solid climate‑control knobs.
The Premium Plus provides both heated and ventilated front seats, heated second‑row seats, and a spacious third row for short‑trip passengers.
The power‑tilt, telescopic steering wheel with memory, 10‑way power driver’s seat, and 8‑way front passenger seat make getting comfortable effortless.
Noise insulation is excellent. Whether you’re cruising in electric mode or under light throttle, the cabin stays remarkably quiet—Mazda finally nails that premium calm.
Technology and Safety
Two 12.3‑inch screens dominate the cockpit: one a crisp digital cluster, the other the central display running Mazda Connect with Online Navigation and Connected Services.
The software is quick, clean, and made better with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The 12‑speaker Bose audio system doesn’t just play—it envelops. Combine that with ambient light and solid ergonomics, and you stop thinking “Mazda,” you start thinking “attention to detail.”
Safety tech is extensive: Blind Spot Monitoring, Smart Brake Support (front and rear with pedestrian detection), Lane Departure and Keep Assist, Adaptive Radar Cruise Control, and Cruising & Traffic Support.
Add the 360‑degree View Monitor with See‑Through and Trailer Hitch view, and it’s clear Mazda designed the system for real‑world usability, not just brochure bragging.
Value and Positioning
At an MSRP of $60,030, the CX‑90 Premium Plus edges close to established luxury territory—but delivers a complete, polished package.
Consider what you get: plug‑in efficiency, genuine premium materials, a long 96‑month/100,000‑mile battery warranty, and 24‑hour roadside assistance.
Compare that with a similarly equipped Volvo XC90 Recharge or Lexus RX 450h+, and Mazda’s proposition becomes compelling.
Verdict
Mazda didn’t just build a bigger CX‑5 with a plug. It built a flagship—the kind of vehicle that finally turns shopping conversations toward this brand for reasons beyond value.
Is it perfect? Not quite. The center console could use a wireless charger shelf, and the rear‑seat space isn’t class‑leading. But in design, driving feel, and overall execution, the CX‑90 PHEV Premium Plus earns the right to wear a premium tag.
Mazda’s been talking about elevating itself for years; with the CX‑90, it finally did it.
Roosevelt – AutoNetwork
Buckle up. Drive safe. And if you’re shopping for a luxury SUV with a plug, this CX‑90 deserves a spot on your short list.
