A man died Wednesday evening after he and a woman allegedly attempted to steal a sport utility vehicle in Chicago’s Loop, police said.

A woman was in an Infiniti FX35 in the first block of East Lake Street when a man and another woman entered her SUV about 5:45 p.m., according to police.

A struggle ensued as the duo attempted to steal the SUV from the driver, and the vehicle continued forward — plowing into a column, authorities said.

The crash trapped the three people inside, but firefighters helped get them to safety, and all three were taken to hospitals, police said.
