A woman was killed in an early morning head-on collision between a Chevrolet SUV and an Audi SUV on St. Charles Road near Hill Avenue in Elmhurst on Wednesday.
At the scene, firefighters extricated the driver of the Chevrolet SUV, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl also were removed from the vehicle. Paramedics transported the children to Loyola University Medical Center with serious injuries.
An adult female driver was the sole occupant of the Audi SUV. Paramedics transported her to Elmhurst Hospital with serious injuries.
The crash happened shortly after 5 a.m. and the road was closed until about 11:30 a.m. as emergency personnel investigated the scene.
According to the police department, preliminary investigations indicate the Chevrolet SUV, traveling eastbound on St. Charles Road, began to drift over the centerline and collided head on with the Audi SUV, which was traveling westbound.
Police did not immediately identify the victim pending notification of family members.
The crash is being investigated by Elmhurst police and the DuPage County coroner’s office.
