Authorities have not released the identity of the woman, whom police said was a 31-year-old Waukegan resident.

Witnesses told police the car she was driving was northbound on Green Bay Road at a high rate of speed at around 2:15 p.m. when it veered into the southbound lanes. It quickly came back into the north lanes before leaving the road, and then rolled several times.

The car came to a stop in a parking lot in the 400 block of Green Bay Road, damaging four cars in the lot, police said.

Emergency responders treated the woman and transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. A passenger in the 2002 Ford Explorer, a 50-year-old Waukegan resident, was taken to the hospital with what police said were injuries that were not life-threatening.

Police said they do not know why the vehicle lost control.
