A Waukegan man was killed and another man wounded after someone in a car opened fire on them over the weekend, police said.
The dead man was identified Tuesday by the Lake County coroner’s office as Stefan Filipovic, 24. Preliminary autopsy results indicate he died from a gunshot wound to the head, the coroner’s office said.

The second shooting victim, a Waukegan man in his 20s, was continuing to recover after undergoing surgery, according to police, who did not release his identity.
The two men were shot around 5 p.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of Washington Street, in what police said appears to have been a targeted attack.

Witnesses told police that a light-colored sedan, possibly a BMW, was seen driving away at a high rate of speed in the moments after the shooting.
The victims were taken to a hospital, where Filipovic died from his injuries.
About 7:45 p.m., police attempted to stop a car matching the vehicle’s description near the intersection of Green Bay and Wadsworth roads. The driver, though, sped away when police tried to stop the car. The vehicle came to a stop with a flat tire near Sheridan Road and Franklin Street, police said.
The driver, a 19-year-old Waukegan man, was taken into custody. Police said they believe the vehicle is the same one spotted near the scene of the shooting. The man is described as a “person of interest” and he remains in custody, though no charges have been filed, police said Tuesday.
The Waukegan police department and its Criminal Investigative Division are continuing to pursue other persons of interest. Anyone with information is asked to call the WPD tip line at (847) 360-9001.
