Walmart plans to shutter three locations in the Chicago suburbs, including one of its first pickup and delivery-only locations in the country, the retail giant said Wednesday.

The location in Lincolnwood was an early prototype for the pickup-only model when it opened in 2019. The store at 6840 N. McCormick Blvd. will close by Feb. 17. Walmart also plans to close stores in Plainfield, at 12690 S. Route 59, and in Homewood, at 17550 S. Halsted St., on March 10.

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Lincolnwood location,” Walmart spokesperson Felicia McCranie said in a statement.

Walmart said the decision to close the three suburban stores came after a “thorough review process” found the stores hadn’t performed as well as hoped. The retailer has a Walmart in Skokie about a mile from the Lincolnwood location and six Walmart Supercenters within 10 miles of the area.

Employees at all three suburban stores slated for closure will be eligible to transfer to other Walmart locations, McCranie said.

Walmart has nearly 5,000 stores across the U.S., including about 180 Walmart and Sam’s Club locations in Illinois.
