A Schererville man is dead from injuries he sustained during a September 15 work accident at an East Chicago steel mill.

Michael Osika, of the 700 block of Moraine Street, died Saturday at the University of Chicago Medical Center as a result of his injuries from the accident at Cleveland-Cliffs’s Indiana Harbor facility, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office. He was 44.

Details have not yet been released, but in a statement, Cleveland-Cliffs spokeswoman Patricia Persico said that “a serious accident occurred while a worker was conducting a routine task at the operation’s ladle maintenance area on Thursday, Sept. 15.” She declined to release other personal details.

“Cleveland-Cliffs expresses its deepest sympathies to the employee’s family, and the Company will provide the necessary support to the family during this difficult time,” Persico said in the statement.

United Steelworkers Union District 7 Director Mike Millsap didn’t return a call for comment.
