Overnight freeze warning issued for northern, western Chicago suburbs

Weekend temperatures were warm enough in the Chicago area that some people may finally have taken their plants outside for the spring and summer seasons.

But forecasters say it’s time to cover or take them back inside as the National Weather Service has issued a freeze warning for late Monday into Tuesday morning. After midnight, the temperature could fall below freezing, particularly in the north, northwest and western suburbs, according to meteorologists.

“Low temperatures (Monday night) across northern Illinois away from the city of Chicago will drop to near or below freezing, posing a danger to sensitive plants and vegetation. Sensitive plants should be covered or brought indoors to protect them from the freezing temperatures,” according to the weather service.

DeKalb and Dixon could drop to as low as 29 degrees overnight, while Waukegan and Elgin could see temps of 31 and 30 degrees, respectively.

Forecasters also warn that temperatures will remain below normal for most of the week. Some light showers could fall in northern Illinois Thursday and Friday, meteorologists said.
