Charges were pending against a suspect who entered an off-duty Chicago police officer’s car early Saturday morning and an exchange of gunfire ensued after he crashed during an attempt to flee, police said.
Shortly after 2 a.m., the officer was outside of a vehicle in the 1500 block of North Ashland Avenue, when someone entered the officer’s vehicle and struck a fire hydrant as he attempted to flee the scene, Chicago police said.

Once he crashed, the suspect got out of the vehicle, and an exchange of gunfire ensued.
No one was hit by gunfire, but the suspect was taken into custody and a firearm was recovered, police said.
