SUMMARY
The National Probate Reform Coalition (NPRC) will host an Elder Justice Symposium on Friday, September 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Oakland City Hall. This event aims to gather elders, families, advocates, policymakers, and community leaders to address elder abuse, financial exploitation, and issues within probate and conservatorship systems. The symposium seeks to inform and empower the community while developing strategies and policies to protect vulnerable elders and disabled residents in Alameda County.
NPRC’s lead facilitator, Tanya Dennis, stated the symposium will bring decision-makers and elders together to develop protective strategies. The coalition has drafted proposed legislation to make conservatorship a last resort through safeguards like mandatory private mediation and the placement of an ombudsman. Additionally, NPRC advocates for stronger protections for elders’ estates and assets against depletion by court-related expenses.
