New Lenox Township Supervisor Donald Cass Wennlund faces charges of driving under the influence of alcohol, illegal transportation of alcohol, operating an uninsured motor vehicle and improper lane use, according to Will County Circuit Court records online.

Will County sheriff’s deputies said at 1 a.m. March 6, they saw a truck leaving a home near 143rd and Chicory Trail in Homer Glen with its hazard lights on, according to the sheriff’s office.

The officers stopped the vehicle because they believed those in the vehicle needed assistance, according to the office. The vehicle drove by and eventually stopped on Chicory Trail, police said.

Deputies said the driver, Wennlund, refused to answer questions, but they “observed several behaviors that gave them reason to believe” Wennlund was under the influence of alcohol, police said.

Wennlund was asked to step out of the vehicle and was arrested. He refused to take a Breathalyzer test, police said.

Multiple attempts to get comment from Wennlund, including stopping by his township office, were unsuccessful. Wennlund’s attorney, Kevin Cummings, did not respond to requests for comment Monday.

A Freedom of Information Act request for the police report was denied March 14 because it would “create a substantial likelihood that a person will be deprived of a fair trial or impartial hearing.”

Last week, Cummings requested the arraignment be continued and paid $200 for Wennlund to get his license back. He is scheduled to be arraigned April 14, according court records.
