A Naperville man has been arrested on charges he fatally struck a bicyclist in West Chicago on the Fourth of July and then left the crash scene.

Bail was set at $500,000 Thursday for John Gray, 26, of the 400 block of Travelaire Avenue, who faces one count of failure to report an accident involving a death, which is a class 1 felony, a report from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office and the West Chicago Police Department said.

Gray is accused of striking 40-year-old Renato Vargas-Gutierrez shortly before 10:50 p.m. July 4 near Joliet and Wilson streets. West Chicago police said officers arrived to find Vargas-Gutierrez in a grassy area with his bicycle partially beneath him, the report said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe the victim was riding his bike southbound on Joliet Street when he was struck by Gray’s vehicle, which was also headed south on the same street, the report said. Gray reportedly fled the scene, and was located by police less than five minutes later near the area of Stevens Court and Continental Drive.

Gray’s next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 3.
