A Woodlawn neighborhood Catholic high school announced Tuesday that it will remain all-boys, ending a consideration to go coed for the first time in its 122-year history.
Mount Carmel High School invited stakeholders to weigh in on the decision starting in June by hosting virtual and in-person listening sessions for parents, alumni, students and donors. The originally scheduled decision, which would have gone into effect in fall 2023, was expected for Aug. 9-10 when the school’s board of directors and board of members are planning to meet.

“The results of the feedback have made it overwhelmingly clear that Mount Carmel High School’s stakeholders want Mount Carmel to remain all-male, and that changing the school’s all-male tradition is not in the best interest of the school,” stated a news release posted to the school’s website and shared on social media.
According to Mount Carmel President Brendan Conroy, the decision is permanent. “We’re not reconsidering it. We’re focused on doing what we’ve done for 122 years and doing it better, which is educating young men here at Mount Carmel.”
