A man died Tuesday near Wadsworth when the car in which he was riding apparently failed to slow at a stop sign and was struck by another vehicle.

The victim was a 76-year-old man from Mexico, the Lake County sheriff’s office said. His identity has not yet been released.

He was in the rear driver’s side seat of a 2018 Hyundai Elantra that was struck in the intersection of Mill Creek Road and Illinois Route 173 at about 1:55 p.m. Tuesday, police said.

The Hyundai driver, a 45-year-old Milwaukee woman, was traveling north in Mill Creek and failed to stop at the stop sign at Route 173, according to police. Her vehicle entered the intersection and was hit by an eastbound Volkswagen GTI being driven by a Lake Villa man.

Police said both vehicles sustained serious damage.

The Hyundai driver suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. Two other passengers in her car, a 23-year-old woman and an 18-year-old man, both of Milwaukee, sustained non life-threatening injuries, according to reports.

The 76-year-old man was transported to Froedtert Pleasant Prairie Hospital in Wisconsin, where he was pronounced dead shortly after arriving, police said.

The Lake Villa man in the other car was not hurt, police said. The crash remains under investigation.
