Man, 29, fatally shot in Evanston park, found dead near North Shore Channel, police say

A man suffering multiple gunshot wounds was found dead in an Evanston park late Thursday when police responded to a call for shots fired, according to Evanston police.

Officers were sent to the 2100 block of McCormick Boulevard, at Isabella Butler Park — not far from the Ladd Aboretum — along the North Shore Channel Canal around 9:05 p.m., authorities said in a Twitter thread with information about the shooting. When police arrived, the man was found lying “in the park along the canal,” officials said. “The victim is deceased.”

The man was identified early Friday as Servando Hamros, 29, of Evanston, according to information from the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He was pronoounced dead at 9:24 p.m. at the shooting scene, the medical examiner’s office indicated.

“The initial investigation indicates the victim had a confrontation with an unknown number of (people). Shots were fired, striking the victim,” police said on Twitter. Then the shooter or shooters “fled the scene on foot.”

Authorities said while there was “not an active shooter,” in a 10:10 p.m. social media post officials warned residents “to remain indoors for the next several hours and report suspicious activity.” The precautions were taken, “due to the fact armed (suspects) fled on foot and are not in custody,” it said.

Roads in the area also were closed off and authorities said there would “be a significant police presence for most of the night.” The post added: “Avoid the area.”

McCormick Boulevard between Bridge Street and Golf Road/ Emerson Street would remain closed through moring rush hour, police advised. There has been no update as to when the road will reopen.

The fatal shooting remains under investigation by Evanston police and no arrests had been made as of Friday morning.
