Legislation would require utilities to start replacing toxic lead pipes throughout the state — except for in Chicago

When the project is completed at the end of next year, the Chicago Department of Water Management will have installed 880 miles of new water mains throughout the city. Each of those cast iron pipes, up to 16 inches in diameter, will have been connected to smaller lead pipes known as service lines that convey water into homes and two-flats.
