Javonte Green still isn’t cleared to run, but Billy Donovan says the Chicago Bulls forward remains ‘on schedule’

Javonte Green isn’t close to returning to the court as the Chicago Bulls near the All-Star break.

Green underwent an arthroscopic debridement on Jan. 11 after struggling for nearly two months with lingering issues from a bone bruise in his right knee.

Nearly a month later, coach Billy Donovan said Green is still restricted to non-contact exercises such as riding a stationary bike. The Bulls have not upgraded Green for dynamic exercises or cleared him to begin running.

Donovan said Green remains on track for the medical staff’s recovery plan — but he couldn’t provide a timeline for when the forward is expected to return.

“There’s a buildup that they normally do; I don’t know what the timeline of that is,” Donovan said before Monday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs at the United Center. “Everything that I’ve heard is that, at least at this point in time, he is on schedule. I haven’t heard about any setbacks or anything like that.”

The injury occurred Dec. 2 at Golden State. Green returned twice for three-game stints but never built back up to his full workload.

Donovan had just moved Green into the starting lineup in the game in which he injured his knee. In the weeks that followed, the Bulls missed his size and defensive stature.

Green did not fly to Paris for the Bulls’ game against the Detroit Pistons because of the recency of his surgery, but he has continued to travel on their other road trips.

“With the All-Star break coming up (Feb. 17-19), that will be another important period for him,” Donovan said. “But he’s getting closer and closer.”
