Infant girl among 3 dead, 3 injured in I-57 shooting Sunday night

Three people are dead and three more wounded after a Sunday night expressway shooting on Chicago’s Interstate 57, authorities say.

Several children are among the victims, including a 1-year-old girl and a 13-year-old boy killed, and a 14-year-old boy hospitalized with serious injuries.

The shots broke out in the northbound lane of I-57 near 111th Street in the Morgan Park neighborhood at 10:37 p.m., Illinois State Police said. The targeted vehicle pulled over at an expressway ramp.

Three people have died and three are wounded, ISP spokesman Josh Robinson said.

A 13-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man were among those killed, records from the Cook County medical examiner’s office indicate. Medical examiners had not yet publicly identified the boy and the man Monday morning.

Medical examiners said the 1-year-old infant child was pronounced dead shortly after midnight, medical examiners said.

Chicago Fire Department first responders pronounced two of the victims dead at the site near West 111th Street and South Bishop Street where the targeted white SUV pulled over, Chief Juan Hernandez said. Paramedics also transported the 14-year-old boy to Comer Children’s Hospital in “fair-to-critical” condition, Hernandez said.

The other hospitalized victims were transported by other authorities. State police declined to say where the victims were hospitalized or confirm their ages.

“This investigation is still in its infancy. To protect the integrity of the investigation, no further information is available at this time,” Robinson said.

State police closed the northbound lane of I-57 from West 127th Street to West 111th Street, but reopened the expressway shortly after 4 a.m., he said.

The shooting is the 16th reported shooting on a Chicago-area expressway in 2023, ISP data shows.
