The first floor of the west wing in the Illinois state Capitol building has been updated with new sprinklers, exit signs, fire alarms and a restoration of its paint, ceiling and decorative wall molding to make the area “Capitol proper,” dating to the 1890s and early 1900s time period. The chandelier was selected to replicate a gas-fed flame. (Armando L. Sanchez / Chicago Tribune)
