Avoid cat and dog manure, meat, dairy products, bones, fish, fats, and oils, as these items can cause odors that attract unwanted animals and insects. Also, your compost pile will likely not get hot enough to kill any pathogens that might be present in some of these waste products. In addition, avoid adding pressure-treated lumber or sawdust, charcoal, weeds with seeds and colored or glossy paper.
