A former East Aurora School District 131 teacher has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for sexually assaulting a student at an elementary school in the district, officials said.
Juan C. Avendano, 65, of Aurora, was sentenced last week for predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, Kane County State’s Attorney’s officials said in a news release. He was found guilty by a jury in August 2021.

Between August 2016 and June 2017, Avendano made sexual contact with the student who was younger than 13 years old, prosecutors said. Avendano was the student’s teacher at Bardwell Elementary School in Aurora.
He had been working as a bilingual kindergarten teacher and was hired by the district in August 2003.

In addition to the prison sentence, Avendano, of the 1300 block of South Glen Circle, will also have to register for life as a sexual offender in accordance with state law.
He receives credit for 276 days served in the Kane County jail.
