Ford Effort Eliminates World War II Veteran Property Taxes

Homeowners who are World War II veterans will no longer have to pay property taxes under a plan pushed by state Rep. La Shawn K. Ford, D-Chicago, that was included in a recently passed property tax reform package.

“We should cherish and respect our remaining World War II veterans, whose service can never be forgotten,” Ford said. “Ending the need for them to deal with property taxes is a small token of our gratitude and appreciation for their lifetime of contributions to our country and state.”

Existing law provides different homestead exemptions to disabled veteran homeowners based on their level of disability, lowering the cost of their bill. Under the language included in the property tax reform package (House Bill 2507), Veterans would receive a 100% reduction in their property’s assessed value regardless of disability level – effectively making it $0. Additionally, qualified individuals will not be required to reapply for the exemption each year.

Ford has pushed for a full exemption for World War II veterans for years, with his most recent individual proposal being House Bill 1048.

“As we mark Memorial Day and recognize the sacrifices of those who did not make it home from World War II, I think it’s important we make the effort to acknowledge those we still have left with us,” Ford said. “The world we grew up in was shaped by their actions and it’s important we honor all of them.”
