For a second time, Cook County commissioners consider a resolution targeting policing, jail funding: ‘We have to say out loud that Black lives matter’

Earlier last summer, Preckwinkle broke from Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Gov. J.B. Pritzker when she announced support for curtailing law enforcement spending — a movement that the mayor has called a “hashtag.” The footprint of the county sheriff’s police force, however, is much smaller than that of Chicago police’s. Ultimately, both the city and county slightly cut the 2021 budgets of Chicago police and the Cook County sheriff’s office, respectively, citing the financial strain of the COVID-19 pandemic.
