Florida Atlantic University on Saturday announced a 10-year contract extension with men’s basketball coach Dusty May, who led the Owls to the greatest season in school history, reaching the Final Four in Houston.
Terms of the deal were not announced.
May, whose 2022-23 squad finished a program-best 35-4, was one buzzer-beating jump shot from his team beating San Diego State on April 1 and playing eventual national champion UConn in the title game.
Before this season, the Owls, who were a ninth seed in this year’s NCAA Tournament, had one previous appearance in the event, losing as a 15th seed to No. 2 seed Alabama in the first round 21 years ago.
May was named the CBS Sports National Coach of the Year, as well as the NABC All-District 17 Coach of the Year and Conference USA Coach of the Year this season.
Finishing up his fifth season, May is the Owls’ all-time leader in coaching wins with a record of 101-60.
“I would like to thank Dr. Stacy Volnick, Brian White, our board of trustees and foundation board for their belief in the direction of our program,” May said in a release from the school. “This is an exciting time to be at FAU, and we are thrilled to build upon last season’s success.”
“What Dusty has accomplished in his first five years at Florida Atlantic is, in my opinion, one of the most remarkable coaching feats in the history of college basketball,” FAU Vice President and Director of Athletics Brian White said.
The Owls look to be a contender again next season, losing one player to graduation, Blanche Ely graduate Michael Forrest.
On July 1, Florida Atlantic officially departs Conference USA and becomes a full member of the American Athletic Conference.
