Northwestern University issued an emergency safety advisory to “shelter in place” Wednesday night after two men were shot at Clark Street Beach, just south of the Evanston campus.
The university first urged the community to find shelter in a tweet at 8:42 p.m. A half-hour later, the university was still advising the community to continue sheltering in place.
The suspects involved in the shooting fled north on Sheridan Road in a sedan after the shooting, the university wrote in a tweet shortly after 9 p.m.
Evanston police responded to a shooting at the 1800 block of Sheridan Road, police wrote in a tweet. Two men were transported to hospitals and no one was immediately in custody, the department said.
“But there does not appear to be a continued threat,” police wrote.
The shooting was not affiliated with Northwestern and the victims were not university students, the department said.
Sheridan Road is closed from Davis to Clark streets, according to Evanston police, who were not immediately available for further comment.
Police are searching the university’s campus and surveillance film, the university wrote in a 9:40 p.m. update. The shooting occurred just before 8:30 p.m., the update said.
“We know this is a stressful situation and appreciate your continued patience and cooperation. We will provide updated information as quickly as we receive it,” the statement said.
