GLENDALE, Ariz. — When meeting with reporters before the 2022 regular-season finale, Elvis Andrus said he enjoyed “every moment” playing with the Chicago White Sox.
Asked if he would be interested in returning, the veteran infielder said on Oct. 5: “I don’t know what’s going to happen in the future. I’m a free agent for the first time in my career, so we’ll see how it goes. But everybody knows the chances are open for me to come back next year.”

Andrus is coming back to the Sox on a one-year contract, pending a physical, a source confirmed to the Tribune on Sunday. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported the deal is for $3 million.
Andrus, 34, signed with the Sox in August to fill in after shortstop Tim Anderson was injured. He would be in a position to help the Sox at second base this season.

Andrus slashed .271/.309/.464 with nine homers and 28 RBIs in 43 games for the Sox last season. He made 42 starts at shortstop and one as the designated hitter. Andrus has played only shortstop and DH throughout his career, which began in 2009 with the Texas Rangers.
“If that’s what it is, if that’s the only option I have, moving from short to another position, I’d be more than happy,” Andrus said on Oct. 5. “For me, it’s about playing and, at this point in my career, winning, being in a winning environment. That would mean a lot for my decision, for sure.”
Andrus would join Romy Gonzalez, Lenyn Sosa and Leury García as options at second base. The Sox hold their first full-squad workout Monday at Camelback Ranch.
