National weather service officials said Tuesday temperatures were expected to hit near 50 degrees after a Monday storm system created heavy downpour and rare tornadoes that struck in the Chicago suburbs.

Tuesday morning officials confirmed two short-lived tornadoes with minimal damage in Naperville and Joliet, but that number could change as officials continued to investigate. The two tornadoes were labeled EF-0 in strength as the one in Joliet caused roof, window and fence damage as well as multiple tree damage, officials saiid. In Naperville, mainly tree damage occurred.

A third tornado happened in east central Illinois in Ford County in Clarence and was determined to be an EF-U which means unknown.

On Feb. 28, 2017, seven tornadoes were confirmed in the Chicago coverage area.

Officials said Monday was a reminder that tornadoes can strike anytime of the year in northern Illinois and northwest Indiana in environments that are favorable for them to spin up quickly such as strong turning winds in the atmosphere with little warming at the surface.

Current temperatures at Midway Airport registered at 39 degrees with partly sunny conditions. At O’Hare International Airport temperatures were at 39 degrees.
