After a number of minutes of back-and-forth whispering with Burton, the attorney told the judge the answers to Swopes’ concerns would take a long time to answer. At that point, the judge reminded Swopes that he elected to represent himself and therefore, other than requests and clarifications his standby attorney could not give him advice on how he could introduce evidence or what he could and could not ask during a hearing.
