The Associated Press has declared incumbent Maria Pappas the winner in the Cook County Treasurer’s race.

Pappas, a Democrat, has been Cook County treasurer since late 1998, a position she took over after she was a member of the Cook County Board for eight years.

Pappas succeeded Ed Rosewell, who opted not to seek reelection in 1998 after being indicted and, in the fall of that year, resigned after he pleaded guilty to charges of having put two state legislators into ghost-payrolling jobs.

One of county government’s most outspoken members, Pappas has used her most recent term to highlight issues in the county’s property tax system, including continued vacancies and lucrative loopholes in the state’s tax sale law.

In her bid for a seventh term, Pappas faced off against Republican Peter Kopsaftis and Libertarian Michael Murphy. A political action committee chaired by Kopsaftis only reported receiving $2,200 since the start of the year: $1,200 from himself and $1,000 from Illinois Republican Party Chair Don Tracy.
