“That’s what I would call a doomsday provision, and you would hope it wouldn’t come to that,” said Timothy King, general counsel for the Chicago Park District. “That’s something that would be subject to negotiation, how to unwind the lease. Since that 2010 ruling, however, public opinion has shifted on college athletes being paid, and Thursday marked the beginning of a new era. Starting July 1, college athletes can make money for their name, image and likeness, whether that be acting as paid sponsors for products or just playing country music.

“The game has changed a little bit,” Hendriks told the Tribune on Thursday before the White Sox’s 8-5 win against the Twins at Guaranteed Rate Field. “This game, there has always been players with egos. … You need that ego. A lot of guys need to have it, whether it’s a chip on their shoulder or they need to play the villain or the antihero to pump themselves up.

“Over the past 18 months, Dan and Tanya have recognized the need for change and have undertaken important steps to make the workplace comfortable and dignified for all employees,” Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement. “Those changes, if sustained and built upon, should allow the club to achieve its goal of having a truly first-tier workplace.”

Bonilla was released by the Mets in January 2000 after hitting .160 with four home runs and 18 RBIs the previous season, when a knee injury limited him to 119 at-bats. “For him to have as good of an eye as he does, get the walks he does and also have power, that’s about as deadly it gets,” Sox starter Dylan Cease said. “We all know what he does defensively.
