“My mother lived life to the fullest,” Susan Reinsdorf said in a statement. “A devoted artist, a big heart, a big personality, a strong woman, she always fought for the underdog and was so compassionate and thoughtful of others. She was such an influence on me, and as I was growing up, was always accepting of me and my friends, as if everyone was always part of the family.”
“I think it’s really cool. You know, I saw the video chat a couple days ago, Garrett and everyone on the call, and I think it’s awesome. You know, these are the stories that (the Yankees) attract each and every year that ultimately become the stories we focus on for HOPE week. They always seem to be unique in nature. And always incredibly heartwarming. And this is one of those stories,” Boone said. “It was neat for me to get to meet her before I came in here and I’m looking forward to her being on the bench for a couple innings tonight.”
“I know that within an hour or two that we were here, Major League Baseball was already in touch with (general manager) Rick (Hahn) and concerned,” Sox manager Tony La Russa said. “Within minutes after (pitcher Michael) Kopech finished throwing (a simulated game) and Billy Hamilton and Zack (Collins) got maybe eight minutes of swings, it started storming, lightning and thunder. I figured there was no chance.”
The Illini and Irish will meet in the Challenge for the third time in seven years when Notre Dame visits the State Farm Center on Nov. 29. The Irish won 84-79 in 2015 in Champaign — the first game in the renovated State Farm Center — and 76-74 in 2018 in South Bend, Ind.
“Had (Durham) won a gold medal in 1984, the sky would have been the limit,” said Jim Schmidt, a creative partner in the Downtown Partners advertising agency. “She would have hopped on the gravy train. No exaggeration, she would have made millions. She was a marketing trifecta: African-American, world-class athlete, woman. There would have been a shoe deal, a beverage deal, cereal … She would have been on TV commentating, maybe her own show, maybe even movies. Certainly a book. Someone like her, there would have been no end to it.”
Austin Romine (left wrist sprain) is on the 60-day injured list and out indefinitely. They designated Tony Wolters for assignment May 19 to open a roster spot for P.J. Higgins. However, Higgins’ first big-league call up only lasted three weeks. He will have right forearm flexor tendon repair surgery within the next couple weeks and is out for the season. Jose Lobaton, 36, is in the majors for the first time since 2018. The only other catcher on the Cubs’ 40-man roster is prospect Miguel Amaya, who is currently on the minor-league injured list at Double A as he rehabs a right forearm strain.
While the music played, Berry placed her left hand on her hip and shuffled her feet. She took a quarter turn, so she was facing the stands, not the flag. Toward the end, she plucked up her black T-shirt with the words “Activist Athlete” emblazoned on the front, and draped it over her head.
“There’s an awful lot of distraction, or motivation, from different circles to hit more home runs,” La Russa said. “‘You can contribute more if you hit for power.’ And most guys when they do that, they come off the baseball, and their contact suffers.
EUGENE, ORE. — The U.S. Olympic track and field trials came to a halt Sunday afternoon with temperatures reaching 108 degrees. One athlete, heptathlete Taliyah Brooks, was carted off the field in a wheelchair and eventually had to withdraw from the competition.
Biles will arrive in Tokyo as the face of her sport, the U.S. delegation and perhaps the Olympic movement. She has become more than just a gymnastics star since her coronation in Rio in 2016. Her consistent excellence — her last second-place finish in a meet came more than nine years ago — combined with her charisma and possibility-pushing routines have thrust her into the company of Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt, athletes whose dominance on the world stage made them Olympic icons.
