Biles arrived on the floor about 90 minutes before the competition started, wearing a red, white and blue leotard emblazoned with nearly 5,000 crystals. If she was nervous, it hardly showed. She warmed up as if it was just another day back in the gym her family owns in the northern Houston suburbs. Twice she hopped onto the beam to do a run-through of her routine and she stuck her double-pike dismount to applause from the stands and the whir of dozens of cameras.
The injury marked yet another disappointment connected to these Games for Morris, who had hoped to be here with her husband, Tyrone Smith, a Bermudian long jumper who was raised in North Chicago. The pair, who fell in love at the Rio Olympics, wanted to compete in Tokyo as a married couple before Smith retired from the sport.
Covering the distance between hurdles 13 powerful steps at a time, Warholm never came close to breaking stride. He sped over the line with arms flailing, but that didn’t cost him much. Low 46 had been a long-imagined dream for most of these hurdlers. Now the mark is in the high 45s.
Paul agreed to a contract to remain with the Western Conference champion Phoenix Suns, another person with knowledge of that deal said. It would be worth nearly $120 million if all four years are completed and would push Paul’s career earnings past the $400 million mark. He turned down a $44.2 million option for next season to negotiate a longer deal, and after the success the Suns had in their run to the NBA Finals, it seemed doubtful he would look to play elsewhere.
“I know there’s a lot of talks out there,” Foles said. “Trust me, I hear it, I see it. But at the end of the day, that creates clutter in my mind because I still have to go out here and I have to practice. I go out there with the three group, and I always tell those guys: ‘I don’t care what the frickin’ coverage is or if you think you’re dead on a route, I’m feeling it right now so be ready. I can fit it in anything.’ And I feel that.”
Credit Jonathan Toews with an assist for Marc-André Fleury’s decision to join the Chicago Blackhawks
Fleury, who has three Stanley Cup titles and won the Vezina Trophy this past season as the NHL’s top goaltender, might have needed a little convincing to accept the trade from the Vegas Golden Knights and join the Hawks. And while president of hockey operations Stan Bowman wouldn’t reveal exactly how Fleury came to his decision, Bowman did admit Hawks captain Jonathan Toews could be credited with an assist.
Heuer, who had a 3.75 ERA in 61 games for the White Sox between 2020 and ‘21, can pitch his way into earning more opportunities with the Cubs. Heuer, 25, believes Ross will look to use him in high-leverage spots, which he says he wouldn’t want any other way.
He averaged a career-high 14.6 points per game while dishing out 4.8 assists in 2020-21, and his shooting numbers, often one of the biggest concerns in his game, took a step forward. He shot 41.4% from the field, 37.8% from 3 on 8.3 attempts with a true-shooting percentage at 55.1%, all of which are career-highs.
“If all of a sudden you’re out there in a game and you’re thinking through things, it’s too slow. The NFL’s too fast. You have to be able to just let it rip. That’s what I look for. So, absolutely, I don’t want to just be traded to someone I don’t know and, ‘Oh, you get an opportunity to play.’ No, I want to be able to go somewhere where I know we’ll be successful because I know the people in there, I know what they stand for, I know who they are as human beings. That’s what you want. That’s what great teams are made of.”
“Things change, right?” Nagy said. “Disguised coverages. They hide their blitzes. Knowing where your protection calls are, being on the same page as the center. That’s where I think now when things get real and you start putting the pads on and the tempo picks up and you’re playing, now we want to see him execute plays and play fast.”
