“Cole and I have gotten together, and in the passing game, we’ve talked through a lot of clips to be able to run certain routes, and I wasn’t able to do that last year in training camp with him,” Nagy said. “Now in OTAs he’d come up to my office and we’ll watch some routes and we’ll put it into fruition in OTAs. Now he gets to do it in training camp. So I think you’ll see him keep growing, and our relationship is building in the trust of how we work with each other.”

“Every day that I come in, it’s the same hunger and passion and love and energy that I have for the game when I was an undrafted guy,” Mustipher said. “I feel like I have a little bit more experience about the schedule, how to prep, what times I need to be doing certain things. I feel like that’s where the experience comes in, but my mindset is still the same, still fighting and scratching and clawing because as quick as I got it is as quick it can go.”

The Cubs will be relying on Contreras, Hendricks and Heyward, already considered leaders before the trade-deadline fire sale, to further fill the void left by the departed players. Manager David Ross already has had conversations with Contreras and Heyward about that and plans to talk with Hendricks, too, after his start Saturday.
