“I’ve been heavy fastball-changeup for most of the year first two times through the order, and as a pitcher when you’re doing one thing for most of the game, especially later on in the game, it’s tough to pivot and try and throw breaking balls,” Davies said after he allowed two runs on three hits with one walk and six strikeouts in 4⅔ innings. “Getting breaking balls early in the game, having a feel for it, getting the hitters to think of more than just fastball-changeup — two similar pitches, just change in velocity for me.”
“He’s hit the ball really hard,” La Russa said. “But that last pitch, the slider got too much of the plate, and the guy put a good swing on it. That’s what’s so good about putting the ball in play, sometimes it finds a hole. The guy, Kirk, even when we’ve got him out, it’s been scary. Just got to figure a different way to approach him.”
The lawsuit details an incident from Oct. 17, 2019, “in which two freshman members of the football team were surrounded by older team members, pinned to the ground with a broomstick forced between their buttocks resulting in penetration that caused the broomstick to break,” attorneys with the Chicago law firm Romanucci & Blandin said in a statement.
“I think mostly it’s going to be observing him, if he’s throwing the ball well and he’s keeping his delivery together, you extend him a little further the next inning,” La Russa said. “It’s going to be the first time he’s actually competing in a game (in a while) and he may get fatigued early, they’ve got a tough lineup. I think you just watch. But he’s not going to be throwing 100 pitches or something.”
In a phone conversation that was accidentally recorded and the Times obtained, Nichols said: “I wish Maria Taylor all the success in the world — she covers football, she covers basketball. If you need to give her more things to do because you are feeling pressure about your crappy longtime record on diversity — which, by the way, I know personally from the female side of it — like, go for it. Just find it somewhere else. You are not going to find it from me or taking my thing away.”
The former player, identified as “Jane Doe” in the complaint, said that her former head coach had an inappropriate relationship with her from 2014, when she was 14, till 2018, when she was 17, according to the lawsuit. The alleged abuse included sexual molestation, oral sex and rape.
“It’s just hard work,” he said. “Coming to work every day, grinding every day and doing what I can do to help this team. … I’m trying to get one step better every single day. I’m not thinking 10 days ahead. It’s, ‘What’s the next challenge tomorrow?’ Then, ‘What’s the challenge the next day?’ ”

“Each day, I’m very thankful to be here, that’s how I’m going about this,” Morgan said. “I don’t think that I deserve anything. I don’t think that this game gives you anything, that’s for sure. If I were to retire, there wasn’t going to be a moment of silence, there wasn’t going to be a retiring of my number — the game doesn’t owe you anything. But for me, you want to respect the game, do the right things and see how far you can go.”
