The scholarship, named “NEIU for You,” will cover 12 credit hours of tuition and mandatory fees for at least 500 first-year, full-time students, after federal, state, institutional, internal/external scholarships and grants have been applied, according to a news release from NEIU. This means that scholarship recipients can earn a four-year degree for the cost of three years.
The 13 neighborhoods will be Auburn Gresham, Austin, Chatham, East Garfield Park, Englewood, Hegewisch, Montclare, Riverdale, Roseland, South Deering, South Shore, West Englewood and West Garfield Park. Some of them overlap with the original 15 communities that were first targeted with “Protect Chicago Plus,” a city-run effort that began in January to bring up vaccination rates in places hard-hit by COVID-19 and with barriers to the shot.
“Today was a win for the people of this great state,” said Illinois House Speaker Emanuel “Chris” Welch, a Democrat from Hillside. “With Gov. Pritzker’s signature, people of Illinois can be confident in a legislative map that is reflective of the diversity that we see in every corner of our state.”

About 8:50 p.m. Thursday, an 18-year-old man and another male were in an argument until the male took out a handgun and began to threaten the 18-year-old in the 6700 block of South Cottage Grove Avenue in the Park Manor neighborhood, police said. The 18-year-old then took out his own gun and began firing at the male, who returned fire, shooting the 18-year-old man in the stomach. The male ran from the scene.
The fire started in the rear of the first floor, though the specific cause of the fire is under investigation, said Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Langford. Responding firefighters quickly put out the fire, but in the room where the fire started, a woman in her 30s was found and pronounced dead at the scene, Langford said.
In-state schools including Western Illinois University, Northern Illinois University, Columbia College Chicago and DePaul University saw large increases in enrollment of CPS students between 2019 and 2020. Meanwhile, Illinois State University, Northeastern Illinois University, Eastern Illinois University and University of Illinois at Chicago experienced comparable decreases in enrollment of CPS graduates. Two-year colleges were also affected by serious enrollment declines.
Police said the girl was a passenger in a vehicle traveling southbound in the 500 block of Lake Shore Drive when the car stopped at a red light. When the light turned green, an unknown person fired shots into the car, hitting the girl in the stomach about 11:30 p.m. Thursday, according to police.
Chicago-based Wilson Sporting Goods, better known for sports equipment, recently introduced a sportswear line and plans to open its first stores later this year. Meanwhile, Dick’s Sporting Goods and Kohl’s announced new private-label apparel brands in March: VRST, a men’s line at Dick’s Sporting Goods, and FLX, for both men and women, at Kohl’s.
“The governor ran as a reformer. He looked people in the eye and said, ‘Look, you can count on me to be different. I promise to stand up to the Democratic machine and I promise to do what’s right for the people,’” said Republican state Sen. Jason Barickman of Bloomington, who has said he’s mulling a run for governor. “The people of this state said very clearly that they want to be represented in our government. And for that, the Democrats have failed them.”
