“Their first question, ‘Do you have drugs or weapons in the car?’ Granted, I’m a big Black guy with ‘locks and the first thing they see, I’m just suspicious. But, as I was telling the guys, I got to make it home to my family,” he said. “I can’t be another case where some officer have his knee on my neck, choking me out. So, my biggest thing is making it back home, regardless.”

On Tuesday, Porter County Sheriff Detective Dan Alonzo walked the jury in John Silva’s trial through the department’s evidence collection from Kerner’s grandparents’ home March 2 and March 3, 2019. Silva, 20, of Hamlet was charged May 22, 2020, with two felony counts of aiding, inducing or causing murder in the perpetration of a robbery and two felony counts of aiding, inducing or causing attempted robbery in connection with the Feb. 25, 2019, deaths of Molley Lanham, 19, of St. John, and Thomas Grill, 18, of Cedar Lake.

For months, King County, like many parts of the country, suspended nearly all hearings except emergency orders, which led to prioritizing child removals — sparked by child welfare reports or other red flags — over family reunifications. Adoptions slowed to a trickle. Services needed for reunification — psychiatric evaluations, random drug testing, group therapy, mental health counseling, housing assistance, and the public transportation to access these services — also were limited.

On June 3, 2021, members of the Lake County Sheriff’s Special Investigations Group conducted a search warrant at the Round Lake residence of Angel Lopez, 21, of the 1300 block of Coventry Glen. Detectives located nearly 200 grams of cocaine, over 20 MDMA pills, over 10 alprazolam pills, along with scales and other items used to package drugs, according to reports. Turning off half the lights at the McCormick Place Lakeside Center, a flattened stretch of glass and steel along Lake Michigan, as opposed to having all windows lit, could lower collisions elevenfold during spring migration and sixfold during fall, researchers estimate. And with just half of lights out, spring migration mortality could be reduced nearly 60%. Conversely, with full lighting, there could be a more than 100% increase in mortality.

“While we realize that this request comes close to trial — and although we are ready to proceed to trial as scheduled in August — our reasons for withdrawal are significant and it is impossible, in our belief, for us to be able to continue to properly represent Mr. Kelly under the current circumstances,” the filing stated. “If the court deems it necessary, we are willing to (serve) as effective stand-by counsel.”
