A spokeswoman for the Anti-Cruelty Society, an animal welfare organization, said there is no “safe heat” for an animal to be left in a vehicle. To avoid injury or illness, the organization does not recommend leaving a dog in a vehicle regardless of weather, she said. Animals can suffer from heatstroke in 15 minutes, according to People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
Sgt. Cassandra Williams, a 30-year department member and 18-year sergeant, told the Tribune that Jason Brown, then an acting commander, asked her on June 2, 2020, to take a team to his block after a neighbor saw someone who appeared to be videotaping or photographing his home, which they perceived as a safety threat. Months later, after she said Brown asked her whether officers were talking about the assignment and told her not to discuss it, Williams said she was given new, less desirable work duties.
West Dundee investigators were informed of the death of Alex T. Hall Jr., of Carpentersville, on Sunday, three days after he was injured at a gas station in the 700 block of South 8th St. during a traffic dispute that turned violent, police said. Hall had been hospitalized at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin at the time of his death, the Kane County Coroner’s Office said.

Torres recently left the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Aurora after more than six years as its president. Previously, Torres was superintendent of Elgin-based District U-46 — the second largest school system in Illinois, following CPS — and serving on the U.S. Department of Education’s Equity and Excellence Commission, according to his IMSA biography, which also states he holds three degrees from the University of Maryland, including a doctorate in educational administration.

The company also has labs in Rockton and Crystal Lake. The company, now owned by a Berkshire Hathaway company after being founded as an independent company, was founded in 1963 and moved its headquarters to Rockton in 2008.
Mayor Lori Lightfoot’s office was organizing the events — which will include music, films, food and cultural heritage celebrations — with the city’s Cultural Affairs and Special Events Department. The mayor planned to make an announcement later Monday with more information, including artist lineups, according to a news release.
Smith died at the scene. State investigators said Smith’s passenger, a 27-year-old woman, was treated for injuries from glass debris. The woman, however, said she never saw a gun on Smith or in the vehicle, her attorneys said last week — contradicting investigators’ claims about Smith’s actions.

The security guard had been in an argument with the 34-year-old when the guard “drew his weapon and discharged it,” hitting the older man at least once in his abdomen.
