A Chicago native who grew up in a modest Southwest Side bungalow, Driehaus graduated from DePaul University and launched his career in 1968 at former Chicago investment bank A.G. Becker. A successful portfolio manager, he went on to work at several different brokerage firms before founding Driehaus Capital Management in 1982. He rose to prominence in Chicago’s philanthropic circles, supporting a number of causes, including the preservation of historical architecture.

The woman, 27, was shot several times, as was one of the men, age 38, and they were both initially in critical condition at Mount Sinai Hospital, according to police. A 27-year-old man who was in the vehicle with them was shot in the leg and was in good condition at the same hospital.

“That’s what I would call a doomsday provision, and you would hope it wouldn’t come to that,” said Timothy King, general counsel for the Chicago Park District. “That’s something that would be subject to negotiation, how to unwind the lease. I would do everything to protect the taxpayer, the interest of the taxpayer, and we would do everything we can to make the taxpayer whole.”

The other people wounded included a 15-year-old boy, who was shot in the left arm and was at St. Bernard Hospital in good condition, according to police. Another man, 46, was also at St. Bernard, where he was in good condition with a gunshot wound to his right leg, police said.

“The ARP money is a once-in-a-lifetime investment,” said Chico Tillmon, a senior research fellow at the University of Chicago Crime Lab and former street outreach worker in Chicago. “We’ll never get it again. You have to, you must, invest at least 2% to 5%. Police are responsive in nature. Ain’t nobody calling police before something happens. Don’t nobody wake up with anxiety, saying ‘I just want to call the police because I don’t feel good today.’ You need people who work in the community, know these people, can talk to these people, can help these people heal.”
