The line in the sand remains, however: Those backing the civilian say this is about police reform and, ultimately restoring police-community relations and trust; opponents, including leaders of the police union and their backers, suggest the panel’s work will be duplicative, will hurt department morale and could even drive up crime if officers become wary of doing their jobs.

Even a six-month delay in screening could lead to an increase in deaths from breast cancer based on modeling studies, Friedewald said. In recent weeks, she said, their pathologists have noticed the percentage of positive biopsies has increased. It’s hard to know why that is, whether it’s because they are prioritizing testing after screenings that look highly suspicious, or if it is due to patients who have more concentrated cancer because they skipped a year.

The fires have burned over 1.2 million acres, and according to the National Interagency Fire Center, over 19,000 firefighters and support workers have been deployed to handle the blaze. Places hardest hit include southern and central Idaho and Oregon, Northern California, the northern Rockies, areas where reports have identified “extraordinarily dry fuels.”
