The 6-year-old-girl suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and right armpit, and was taken to Loyola University Medical Center, where she was stabilized, police said. The 7-year-old was shot in the chest and torso, and was also taken to Loyola, where she was pronounced dead.
About 1 p.m., a suspect driving a BMW X3 struck another vehicle in the 800 block of West Addison Street and then hit two pedestrians in the 3500 block of North Fremont Street, Chicago police Officer Michelle Tannehill said. The driver had failed to stop at a stop sign and hit the pedestrians in a crosswalk, police said Sunday. After striking the pedestrians, the driver of the BMW X3 drove on the sidewalk on Fremont Street, collided with an iron fence and fled the scene on foot along with a passenger, police said.
A woman, 30, and a man, 31, were each shot in the leg, while two men, 35 and 45, were shot in both the arm and the leg. All four arrived via private vehicle at University of Chicago Medical Center, where they were in fair condition. People who spoke to police said they could not see where the shots came from, officials said.
“Yes, we absolutely have challenges in the city; there’s no question about it,” Lightfoot told reporters ahead of the event. “We can’t lose sight of the fact that the vast majority of the people in the city, the vast majority of folks who live on the South Side, love their city, love their neighborhood, love their block, and just want to be able to live in a peaceful, vibrant environment. And that’s what Bud Billiken completely exemplifies.”

The men were southbound on California when they heard shots and felt pain. The older victim suffered a leg wound, and the other man was shot below the eye and in a shoulder. Both got themselves to Mount Sinai Hospital where the younger man was listed in critical condition, and the other man’s condition was stabilized, police said.
Officers were conducting a traffic stop about 7 p.m. Friday in the 100 block of 63rd Street near South State Street when the driver of an Impala reversed his car and dragged the officer, pinning him between the Impala and a viaduct, said Michelle Tannehill, spokesperson for the Chicago Police Department.
“During her short but courageous career, Officer French earned a Department Commendation, a Physical Fitness Award and 14 Honorable Mentions,” police Superintendent David Brown said in a statement announcing the arrangements. “I encourage all Department members to join in paying tribute to Officer Ella G. French.”
“Public safety belongs to the people, which means that the people should be able to share their opinion at public hearings and meetings,” Peters, a Chicago Democrat, said Friday in a statement. “This is especially true of police board meetings. Law enforcement using background checks to intimidate people from participating in the very hearings that will hold them accountable should set off red flags for everyone as something that should not be permitted to happen.”
